Henry Rousseau with kids

Kinders through 5th graders did this project. We looked at many of Rousseau's paintings and talked about his late start in art life and career.  We used 3 colors and sponges to create a fall forest background. Next class we practiced drawing woodland animals with oil pastel. Next class we cut them out and glued them down and then drew trees on top.

Leaf people with Kinders

Kids love to collect things from nature. We collected leaves and modged-podged them onto black paper and then added arms and legs with oil pastel on top of them to make leaf people.

POP ART LAP TOPS

2nd, 3rd and 4th grades looked at Pop artist Claes Oldenburg for inspiration on this project. This project took 4 classes. First class we painted a piece of cardboard black and we sketched out what a keyboard would look like if we could design it. It had to include buttons that you might not see on a regular computer, like a button to order pizza or a button to be transported to your favorite place. Next lesson we made the keyboard on watercolor paper. Next class we made a "screen". I gave them scrapboard paper and magazines for a simple collage. Next class we glued the screen and the keyboard to the cardboard. Kids really loved making these.

EntomologARTist at LILL STREET

Had the pleasure of working with 3-5 year olds at Lill Street
last month. Lill Street is an incredible art center on the
Northwest side of Chicago. The week long camp was centered
around being inspired by insects.

We used mixed media to build gardens:

learned about symmetry with cardboard wings

made masks with paper mache

made bug jars with honeycomb paper
          fly away little ones!
